Physical education games: A new way of studying science
Physical education has become a hot topic for students, teachers and parents, with more than 500 million people in the UK studying physical education in 2020.
But while the science of physical education is becoming increasingly accessible, it has remained inaccessible for many.
Professor John Fauci from the University of Sussex is taking the challenge of providing access to physical education through virtual learning.
He has developed a new tool to make it easier for parents and students to study physical education together, called the Virtual Physical Education Project.
The new tool is available for download at www.physicseducationjournal.org.
“Parents and students can take it online, they can use it in their classroom, and they can take the test online, or they can get the test and take it in the physical world,” he said.
“But if they can’t do that, the only way they can really understand it is by using it in a classroom.”
Mr Faucy says parents and teachers can access the Virtual Physiology Journal by logging in to their account, then choosing one of their preferred study options.
“The first thing that you do is choose one of the study options, and then you choose your study topic, which is what we call the physical education topic, and we will give you a list of physical activity activities you can do,” he explained.
“Then we give you an interactive chart to look at.”
Mr Poulter says the Virtual Physics Journal is a step in the right direction.
“It will allow teachers to have a really clear understanding of what physical activity is, what the key components are, and how to study the subject,” he told RTE.
“We will also be able to have students working with us in their own labs and on their own time, so it will give teachers and students a real opportunity to work together, so that is really good news.”
Mr Feag said it was important for parents to learn about the physical environment in order to make good decisions about physical education.
“Children need to understand that physical activity in the real world does affect the brain and the heart, and physical activity can have a lot of benefits to the body,” he added.
“Physical activity can help us sleep better, reduce the risk of heart disease, improve our health, and reduce the chances of developing cancer.”
The Virtual Physical Educators Association also encourages parents to download the Virtual PHE Journal and then review it regularly.
“They can take that to their doctor, to their school, to anyone that they think might benefit from it, and that is what parents should do, too,” said Dr James Burdge from the association.
“So we are very excited about this, because it is really an open and accessible tool, so parents and parents can download it and then work together to really get it to the best of their ability.”
The results of the virtual physical education project have been published in the journal Physical Education Journal.
