How to get into the NFL: physical education checklist
NFL Network host Mike Mayock is the new head of NFL Media, and he has some interesting takeaways from his first day at the helm.
He’s not a believer in the traditional physical education curriculum and he feels like the NFL should start teaching its players to “see” the game, but he also feels the current league is a “little bit of a mystery.”1.
The physical education exam is really important, Mayock says, and it’s an issue that the NFL needs to address.
“It’s something I’m very passionate about,” he says.
“I don’t think we can be a spectator sport if we’re not watching our players, and that’s something that needs to change.
So this is something I really, really believe is an important piece of our evolution as a league.
I think it needs to be taught.”2.
The NFL should also be doing more with its physical education programs, Mayocks advice.
“When I started this job, I was a huge believer in teaching our players how to run, how to catch, how it should feel, and how to interact with the world,” he said.
“But now, you’re not going to see those skills taught in the physical education room, or in the classroom, and the reason why is that we’re spending more money on coaches and trainers to do more with their bodies.
That needs to stop.”3.
If the NFL wants to have its physical-education program better, it needs some better equipment.
“The thing that is probably most important, if it’s a big league team, is the equipment that they have in their facility,” he told Mayock.
“They have a whole suite of equipment that can be utilized in their facilities, but if you’re a smaller team like the Bills, and you’re an under-16 team, there are a lot of little kids who aren’t used to the physical things that you’re going to have, and we have to give them some equipment that’s not going through the locker room, and I think that needs better equipment.”4.
NFL players should be encouraged to watch the game on TV, too, as that will help build a better sense of awareness.
“You want them to have a clear understanding of the game,” he added.
“That’s the way they’re going about it.
You want them understanding that it’s not the best game.
They’re watching it because they’re learning about it.”5.
The league is trying to make sure that players get the most out of their bodies, too.
“There’s some pretty basic things you can do to enhance your physical performance,” he noted.
“And that’s a really important thing to have in a game.
If you’re in the game and you see your teammates running at the line of scrimmage, that’s your cue.
That’s your moment.
If that’s the case, I think the more we can do for our players is make sure they’re engaged in the moment and that they understand that the moment is theirs to make.”
